Al-Barr is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Source of Goodness," "The Most Kind and Beneficent". It expresses that all goodness, kindness, and beneficence originate from Allah. He is gentle and generous with His servants, abundant in favours, accepting little from them and giving much, and treating their weaknesses with kindness rather than severity.
The Meaning in Depth
The root of Al-Barr (birr) is the same word used for the highest goodness — including dutiful kindness to parents. Applied to Allah, it reveals a Lord whose goodness is boundless and freely given: He answers prayers, forgives sins, multiplies rewards, and showers favours upon the grateful and ungrateful alike. The Quran says the believers will recognise Him in Paradise: "Indeed, we used to call upon Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent (Al-Barr), the Merciful" (52:28).
