What does Al-Batin mean?
Al-Batin is one of the 99 Names of Allah, mentioned in Surah al-Hadid (57:3), paired with Az-Zahir. It means "The Hidden," "The Most Near". It carries two intertwined meanings: Allah is hidden from the perception of the senses and beyond the grasp of imagination; and He is intimately near — closer to His servant than anything, knowing the innermost secrets of every heart.
The Meaning in Depth
The Prophet ﷺ explained: "You are Al-Batin, so there is nothing below (or beyond) You" (Muslim 2713). No mind can encompass Him, no eye can grasp Him in this world — He is utterly beyond the reach of the senses. Yet this same hidden God is nearer than any near thing: "We are closer to him than his jugular vein" (50:16). His hiddenness is not absence; it is a nearness too intimate and exalted to be perceived.
