Names of Allah

Al-Ghafur

Al-Ghafūr

الغفور

The Forgiving — whose forgiveness is vast, covering even the greatest of sins for those who sincerely repent.

What does Al-Ghafur mean?

Al-Ghafur is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The All-Forgiving," "The One who repeatedly forgives". It expresses that Allah not only pardons sins but covers them, concealing the faults of His servants in this life and the next, and forgiving abundantly however many times one returns to Him in repentance.

The Meaning in Depth

To "forgive" in the sense of ghafr is both to pardon and to cover. Allah, Al-Ghafur, does not merely overlook sin; He veils it from others and from punishment, and treats the repentant servant as though the sin never occurred. The intensive form signals that His forgiveness has no limit in extent or in number — He forgives great sins and forgives them again and again.

Al-Ghafur in the Quran

  • "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful." (39:53)
  • "And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful." (4:110)
  • "And indeed I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness." (20:82)

Living by This Name

This name is a fountain of hope. No sin is too great for Allah's forgiveness for the one who turns back to Him sincerely; despair of His mercy is itself a grave error. The name also calls the believer to forgive others and to conceal their faults, for Allah loves those who pardon. The Prophet ﷺ relayed: "O My servant, as long as you call upon Me and place your hope in Me, I will forgive you for whatever sins you have committed" (Tirmidhi 3540).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is any sin too big to be forgiven?

For the one who sincerely repents before death, no sin is beyond Allah's forgiveness — even shirk is forgiven upon sincere return to Tawhid. The one sin not forgiven is dying upon shirk without repentance.

What is the difference between Al-Ghafur and Al-Ghaffar?

Both are intensive forms from the same root. Scholars note that Al-Ghafur emphasises the depth and completeness of forgiveness, while Al-Ghaffar emphasises its repeated, recurring nature; together they show forgiveness that is both total and endlessly renewed.

Etymology & origin

Al-Ghafur (الغفور) is from the root GH-F-R (غ-ف-ر), meaning "to cover, to conceal, to forgive". The root literally relates to covering something protectively (as in mighfar, a helmet). The form Ghafur is intensive, denoting the One who forgives abundantly and repeatedly, covering the sins of His servants and shielding them from disgrace.
