What does Al-Waliyy mean?

Al-Waliyy is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Protecting Friend," "The Patron," "The Guardian". It affirms that Allah is the close ally and protector of the believers: He guides them, defends them, manages their affairs, and brings them from darkness into light. To have Allah as your wali is the highest security a person can know.

The Meaning in Depth

The word wali carries two intertwined meanings: nearness and support. Allah is near to the believer with love and care, and He actively supports and takes charge of his affairs. This name should not be confused with Al-Wali (الوالي, the Governor of all creation): Al-Waliyy emphasises the special bond of friendship and protection Allah extends to those who believe. The Quran contrasts the believer, whose wali is Allah, with the disbeliever, whose only allies (awliya) are false powers that cannot help.
