Names of Allah

Ar-Rashid

Ar-Rashīd

الرشيد

The Guide to the Right Path — whose every act is guided by perfect wisdom and direction.

What does Ar-Rashid mean?

Ar-Rashid is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Guide to the Right Path," "The Infallibly Right-Directing". It carries two senses: Allah's management of all affairs is perfectly directed, with no error or deviation, every decree reaching its right and wise end; and He is the One who guides His creation to rectitude (rushd) — sound judgement, right conduct, and the straight path.

The Meaning in Depth

Rushd is the opposite of ghayy (error and misguidance). Ar-Rashid directs all of existence with flawless wisdom — never needing correction, never failing to reach the right outcome. And He bestows rushd upon His servants: the inner soundness of judgement and uprightness that leads to good. The Quran connects faith with finding rushd: "...whoever rejects false gods and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold", having attained right guidance (cf. 2:256, 18:10).

Ar-Rashid in the Quran (related meaning)

  • "...Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and prepare for us right guidance (rashada) in our affair." (18:10)
  • "...Is there not among you a man of right judgement (rashid)?" (11:78)

The quality of rushd (right guidance) that defines Ar-Rashid runs throughout the Quran's call to sound, upright direction.

Living by This Name

Ar-Rashid teaches the believer to seek right guidance and sound judgement from its true source. When facing decisions, the believer asks Ar-Rashid for rushd — to be directed to the right and the good — as in the dua of the People of the Cave (18:10). It brings trust that Allah directs all affairs wisely, even when the wisdom is hidden, and inspires the pursuit of maturity, rectitude, and steady guidance in one's own life.

How can one attain rushd (right guidance)?

By turning to Ar-Rashid in sincere supplication for guidance, following revelation, seeking knowledge, and consulting the wise. The Quran teaches the dua "prepare for us right guidance in our affair" (18:10) — asking the Source of all rushd to direct one to what is right.

Etymology & origin

Ar-Rashid (الرشيد) is from the root R-SH-D (ر-ش-د), meaning "right guidance, sound direction, maturity of judgement". From it come rushd (right conduct, sound judgement) and irshad (guiding aright). Ar-Rashid is the Guide to the Right Path: the One whose every decree is perfectly directed to its right end, and who guides His creation to what is right and good.
