Who was Salman al-Farisi?

Salman al-Farisi ("the Persian") was a beloved companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ whose remarkable life journey — from a fire-worshipping Persian household, through years of seeking, to the heart of Islam — made him one of the most respected figures of the early community. The Prophet ﷺ honoured him with the words, "Salman is one of us, the People of the House (ahl al-bayt)."

His Life

Born near Isfahan in Persia into a Zoroastrian family, Salman felt that the truth lay elsewhere. He left home and travelled in a long search for true monotheism, living among devout Christians and serving a succession of righteous monks, the last of whom told him of a coming prophet in the land of Arabia bearing the seal of prophethood. On his way, Salman was betrayed and sold into slavery, ending up in Medina. There he met the Prophet ﷺ, recognised the signs he had been told of, and embraced Islam. The Prophet ﷺ helped arrange his freedom. Salman became known for his deep knowledge and wisdom; at the Battle of the Trench (al-Khandaq), it was his suggestion to dig a defensive trench around Medina that protected the city from the Confederate armies.
